Bletchley railway station 1943 by Natalie Orchard
DS "Union Flag"
Issued in association with Home Front History to celebrate
the 70th anniversary of the most significant year in Bletchley Park
history. 1943 was a special year for Bletchley Park on several fronts
making nearby Bletchley railway station even busier. From January to
December 1943 the Foreign and Commonwealth office reported receiving
14,050 decrypted messages from Bletchley Park. Of particular importance
were those for the Admiralty that enabled the Royal Navy to defeat the U
Boats and win the Battle of the Atlantic. Gaining control of these waters
changed the course of World War 2 and made the 1944 D-Day landings a
possibility. In May 1943 the UK and USA also began to exchange
intelligence and start the so-called Special Relationship. American
personnel were stationed at Bletchley Park as part of this. In December
1943 the first Colossus computer was installed at Bletchley Park so the
pioneers of modern computing would most likely have travelled there by
train.
