(IMA) is an international group of 38 national societies. The most active
IMA commission is the Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names
which was founded in 1959 to coordinate the assigning of new mineral
names, revision of existing names and discreditation of invalid species.
There are currently more than 4,000 known minerals, according to the International
Mineralogical Association. Of these, perhaps 100 can be called
"common", 50 are "occasional", and the rest are
"rare" to "extremely rare". The Commission on
New Minerals and Mineral Names celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2009
and we hope this customised stamp sheet goes someway in capturing some of
the beauty and magic of minerals.
