The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, usually referred to simply as Kew
Gardens, are extensive gardens and botanical glasshouses located
between Richmond and Kew to the southwest of London. Apart from
attracting nearly 2 million visitors every year it is is also an
internationally important botanical research and education institution
employing around 700 staff. The gardens are a non-departmental
public body sponsored by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural
Affairs. Created in 1759, Kew Gardens celebrate their 250th
anniversary in 2009. From July 2003, the gardens were put on the list
of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
