50th Anniversary Antarctic Treaty
|
|
|
2009 is the 50th Anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty.
The Antarctic
Treaty was signed in Washington DC in 1959 and has, to this day,
endured as one of the world's most successful agreements between nations of
the world. Originally an agreement between 14 nations, the number of
signitories to the agreement has grown and now stands at 47. The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has, for over 60 years, undertaken the majority of Britain's scientific research on and around the Antarctic continent. It now shares that continent with scientists from
over thirty countries. In this distinctive customised stamp sheet we are
pleased to be able
to share some striking images depicting the work and courage of the British
Antarctic Survey, which reminds us of the harsh reality of working in
sub-zero temperatures for most of the year. The Antarctic is truly one of
the last untouched places on the planet and the Antarctic Treaty
Agreement, signed 50 years
ago, ensures that it will hopefully remain that way for many years to come.
A very limited edition of just 200 sheets this sheet will not be around
