Our NASA at 50 sheet is a celebration of the achievements of NASA which
celebrated its 50th birthday in 2008. This beautifully designed sheet
features the iconic image of space shuttle astronaut Bruce McCandless,
taken from about 100 meters out from the cargo bay of the space shuttle
Challenger, further out than anyone has ever been before. Guided by a
Manned Manoeuvring Unit (MMU), astronaut McCandless, was floating free in
space. McCandless and fellow NASA astronaut Robert Stewart were the first
to experience such an "untethered space walk" during Space
Shuttle mission 41-B in 1984. The MMU works by shooting jets of nitrogen
and has since been used to help deploy and retrieve satellites. With a
mass over 140 kilograms, an MMU is heavy on Earth, but, like everything,
is weightless when drifting in orbit.
Inspired by the 40th Anniversary of the First Manned Moon landing in 1969,
this sheet is the first in a mini series of three customised stamp sheets
to be issued by us and featuring the fantastic images of NASA - literally

the impossible possible for over 50 years of space exploration.
